Perfect Advertising Placement (from armybarmyremix Blog)
I came across this the other day as I walked down Hastings street in Canada's poorest postal code... I read in Time that advertisers just spent a record 8 billion dollars in consumer research this year... wonder if Lexus thinks it was worth the cash?
If you feel poorer, you probably are and you're not alone
It wasn't supposed to turn out this way.
They told us that government spending was out of control and that if we tackled the deficit - "got the fundamentals right," to use their phrase - we'd be sitting pretty. So, we tackled the deficit.
They told us that we couldn't afford public goods and social programs anymore and that, besides, schemes like employment insurance and welfare interfere with the magic of the free market. So, we gutted employment insurance and we slashed welfare rates. We hiked tuition fees for universities and colleges. We cut back the operating hours of public libraries and stopped taking care of the grass in public parks.

The new face of Poverty
Globe and Mail Update
In spite of their higher education levels, new immigrants to Canada are worse off now than they were in the 1990s, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday.
In 2002, low-income rates among immigrants during their first full year in Canada were 3.5 times higher than those of Canadian-born people. By 2004, the rate had eased only slightly, to 3.2 times higher, Statscan reported.

Winnipeg is Chilli
Afterwards Rebecca, Sarah-Grace, and I went skating with Weetamah. That was Chilly too! We had a lot of fun skating along the Assinaboine River and later I went snow-shoeing (for the first time ever) on the Red River. People in Winnipeg take winter seriously: there was free hot chocolate served by people in historical costumes and as there was a hockey game on the Assinaboine River, there was also a ZAMBONI. Captains Russell took pity on me - an unprepared Westcoaster - and lent me a pair of good mittens and an extra coat. It was a lot of fun...

Education
Under an initiative by UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) corporate partner Microsoft, every Internet search performed at http://click4thecause.live.com/Search/Charity/Default.aspx using the computer software giant's Live Search facility will result in a donation to UNHCR's ninemillion.org. global campaign, launched last World Refugee Day on 20 June with help from Microsoft, Nike and other corporate partners. Under the "Click for Cause" initiative, Microsoft has agreed to host the search site until the end of March and to promote it by creating a downloadable gadget and developing online advertising to appear on the MSN portal websites in certain countries. It will guarantee a minimum donation of $100,000 to UNHCR based on the number of queries generated from the search site. An easy way to reduce divorce rates...
More Chinese are happy to stay married than previously thought
China has discovered the truth behind its worryingly high divorce rate - a statistical inconsistency.
For years, the country's official divorce rate has been calculated on the basis of the number of people divorced, the China Daily newspaper reports.
Now Chinese statisticians have decided to follow the international practice of counting the number of actual divorces, and seen its divorce rate cut in half.
The 2005 rate fell from 2.76 divorces per 1,000 people to 1.38.

Christian School (P. II)
...the kids are great! I have never seen an entire elementary school so well behaved in an assembly. I have never seen one run so well (and I have seen many!). This is not like secular education at all.
The kids pay attention. The kids learn. Rebecca and her classmates are well ahead of where they might otherwise be in the secular school system.
I think that I may be being won over ...

Christian Persecution (Part 1)
This persecution by the secularists is not new. There are places in this country where a teacher is not even allowed to say Christmas, 'winter festival' is the newspeak that the thought police are told to enforce.
I don't understand why the atheists have such power. In theory this is a democracy; in theory there are way more theists than atheists in Canada. It would make more sense then to allow prayers in public schools, and public meeting, than to make it an offence to talk to God.
It would make more sense for teachers, students, politicians, and public servant, to offer up their prayers to God. The Anti-Theists could then leave or they themselves could pray - after all I believe that one of the secular humanists' beliefs is that the majority is right the majority of the time.

The Samaritan woman at the well
The message today was about the woman at the well. Captain Robert Russell preached a good narrative sermon retelling the story from John chapter 4.

Super size the Covenant?
I just saw Super Size me' (for the first time) the other day.
We have just finished an intensive course on the history of the Salvation Army. I realize that we have come a long way from the days of the Booths who wouldn't take medication perscribed by the doctor, read novels, tolerate going to movies, gambling, drinking, or anything else that could 'enslave the mind or body.'
We just heard reports back about a training college in another country where enough of the cadets are obese or overweight that it was decided to spend money to hire personal trainers for them.
Some of the earliest Salvationists evidently had to be encouraged to eat. They would rather starve themselves than take money from the mission.
I was reading that more people in Canada suffer from eating-related problems than smoking and drinking. I understand that more people struggle with junk food than are affected by gambling in this country.
So, I was wondering - from one who does enjoy a Big Mac every once and a while, if fast food is a violation of the Soldier's covenant.

From Aaron White at armybarmy
Thursday, January 18, 2007 Risky Business...
I suggested this at Roots South, and it got something of a reaction (not Amens!, but ohhhhhhs) -
Caring for the orphan and the widow in their distress does not get you saved. Only Christ can do that. But NOT caring for the orphan and the widow in their distress (etc...) might be a good indication that you are not saved.
I do not think Jesus could be more clear in his connection of the two things.
Rev James Forbes put it this way:
No one gets into heaven without a letter of reference from the poor.
Grace,
Aaron

An Anglican Covenant
Frustration has been mounting in the Church of England. Earlier this week, a group of evangelicals (representing 2000 parishes) met with Archbishop Rowan Williams to disclose a detailed plan to provide orthodox episcopal oversight to conservative parishes within extremely liberal dioceses. A covenant outlining the desire and rationale of the evangelical leaders was released following the meeting.

Food for Prayer: Huge crowds at US porn convention
About 200 pornographic films are shot in the US every week
Thirty thousand people have gathered in the US city of Las Vegas for the annual convention of the pornography industry.
The scale of the Adult Entertainment Expo reflects the huge growth in a business which is said to be bigger than Hollywood and worth $57bn (£29bn).
Estimates of its annual contribution to the US economy range from $12bn-$20bn.
One of the reasons for its recent success is the pioneering use of new technology - video on the internet and use of moving images on mobile phones.
The BBC's Guto Harri in Las Vegas says it is easy to be embarrassed at such a show, with explicit films, intimidating toys ....

The oath of office that Chavez gave was rather unusual, in that he swore it in the name of Jesus Christ, who was “the greatest socialist of history,” his children, the country’s liberators, and the people of Venezuela that he would “not give rest to my arm nor rest my soul, that I will give my days and nights, my entire life to the construction of Venezuelan socialism, of a new political system, of a new social system, of a new economic system.”

Scripture
In one of the many meetings we have attended this holiday season. It was suggested that we keep Micah 6:8 (read Micah 6 on-line: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Micah%206&version=31 ) in mind as we enter the New Year. I think this is a good idea.

Anglican Church of Canada appoints first indigenous bishop
Toronto — The Anglican Church of Canada marked a “historic moment” in its history today by introducing its first indigenous bishop.
In his new role, Bishop Mark MacDonald will have pastoral oversight over indigenous Anglicans throughout Canada.
Bishop MacDonald will assume the office March 1 after serving about 10 years as bishop of the U.S. Episcopal Diocese of Alaska.
Archbishop Andrew Hutchinson, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, says McDonald's appointment is meant to give aboriginals in the church a figure of central leadership.

From Salvationarmy.ca - a message from Commissioner MacMillan
Dear Friend
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family all the best during this wonderful Christmas season.
It’s been an exciting year that has been full of change and prosperity. Recent reports show that the Canadian economy is ranked by many as one of the best in the world and the generosity of the Canadian public continues to amaze me. Through the support of people like you, The Salvation Army is able to give hope today and everyday to thousands across the country who might otherwise remain invisible. Thank you for opening your eyes and your hearts this Christmas.
During the 2005 Christmas season, The Salvation Army raised $20 million through its National Christmas Campaign. While the totals for 2006 have yet to be finalized, we are encouraged by the tremendous response in communities across the country. This year during the Christmas season, thousands of vulnerable families and children shared in the joy of Christmas because caring Canadians support The Salvation Army
86,000 adults and 95,000 children receive practical assistance
330,000 toys are distributed to children across Canada
59,000 food vouchers and hampers given to marginalized families
